..[ Poem - My Country ]..
I love a sunburnt country,
The land of green and gold
With many sports and games,
Competing is in our soul
With Ford and Holden races
And the Formula 1 grand prix
Great music played across the land
Australia’s the place for me
A land of smoking chimneys
Creates devastating pollution
The muddy littered rivers
Is there no solution??
Broad, busy bulldozed acres
Once wastes of fern and trees
Now rapidly enriching
Investors overseas
I lover her golden beaches
The dark, starry night
Her ragged mountain ranges
The home of vegemite
Her love of cricket
Brings the great Don Bradman,
Home to the 2000 Olympics
With the amazing Cathy Freeman
A music loving country
With great sounds across the land
The home of AC/DC,
The greatest ever Aussie band
I lover her shining crystal sea
Also the hopping kangaroo
I love the afternoon barbeque
‘Tis the place for me and you

I LOVE the unity of time, of place and of subject.
Jeremy: the French Classicists would be VERY proud of you, and so would Dorothea McKellar. Though she may well have been sceptical of the emphasis on sport.
I like your second verse best:
“A land of smoking chimneys
Creates devastating pollution
The muddy littered rivers
Is there no solution??
Broad, busy bulldozed acres
Once wastes of fern and trees
Now rapidly enriching”.
This reminds me of how Australia changes in a bushfire. Remember the Grampians in January?
